Self Protection Training for Helping Professionals
January 18 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
The nature of helping professions may place workers in dangerous settings which bring about risks towards their physical well being. As people helping other people, they inevitably participate in the hardest times for our service users, facing not only sadness, but frequently meeting frustration, anger and defiance. Unfortunately the possibility of escalation to violence can never be escaped. The self protection training is specifically designed to use both physical and non-physical techniques that help workers in this sector to protect themselves without violence. The first part of the training focuses on enhancing the competence in methods of prevention and de-escalation of anger and violence. The second part of the training aims to provide workers with protocols of execution and also non violent physical techniques to address moments of violence and even proceed to restrain when needed. This program remains mindful of the helping relationship and therefore all techniques have been meticulously designed to create the least possible harm. The techniques are derived from different martial arts which have been carefully selected to create a wide repertoire of easy to learn techniques that are applicable and effective in a number of situations.
