While some may have been looking forward to getting back to their workplace following a period of working from home during the partial lockdown, perhaps this feeling is not equally shared by everyone. Going back to the workplace could be a daunting thought for some. In this blog I will be sharing three tips for those who are struggling with the thought of going back to working at their desk all day.
- Reconnect with your colleagues:
One way of doing this could be to spend your break time with your colleagues. Having your lunch while on your laptop can be tempting, but avoid doing so. Instead, plan to stop for your break, put your laptop at the side, ask if your colleagues would like to stop for their lunch with you and have a chat. If this is not a possibility, perhaps you can also schedule a phone call with a loved one during your break so that you can connect with someone out of your workplace and focus on something else for a while.
2. Plan something rewarding to do before/after a day at work:
Think of your routine before and after a day at work. It might be nice to plan a few things that you enjoy doing either before work or after work. For instance, if you enjoy physical activity, perhaps you can start your day with a morning run. Or maybe you might prefer to have something to look forward to following your day at work, such as meeting a friend for a coffee, or going to the beach.
3. Give yourself the space to adjust:
Going back to work might be a big change for you, and as with many changes, you might need some space and time to adjust and to fall into the routine of things. Having said so, it is also important to not ignore the fact that people may go through changes that can impact what they want to be doing at work and what gives them job satisfaction. Thus, if this feeling remains with you even after you give yourself the space to adjust, perhaps start to reflect about what it is that you think you need. If it is possible, you could even start by discussing this feeling with your superiors, who could direct you to new roles or tasks which could fit more with what you would like to do.
