During the previous blog, the focus was placed on provision of information as a main aspect of career guidance. Another main responsibility of the guidance practitioner is advising. Through career advice, the practitioner assists the client to understand themselves, mainly their interests, abilities and talents and help them figure out what they want. The role of the advisor is to empower the client to make sense of their present situation and take realistic decisions related to education and work. In many cases, through career advice and counselling, the practitioner can help the individual evaluate and organize one’s thoughts and feelings. Through this career advisory process, the practitioner can also support the client in working out a plan of action. The final decision has to always be made by the client, whatever their age. However, the practitioner can help make sense of this complex process.
