Willingness Summer Internship: An International Internship Experience in Malta
When I began searching for a summer internship, I came across Willingness, and I instantly sensed it could offer something special. As I now reflect on my time here, I can confidently say that this international internship experience has been one of the most rewarding opportunities in both my personal and professional journey.
Learning from Mental Health Professionals
One of the most valuable aspects of the internship was the opportunity to learn from experienced and knowledgeable mental health professionals. Working at the clinic gave me a real-world look into the day-to-day responsibilities of a psychology practice, including client management and administrative tasks that happen behind the scenes.
Through individual research tasks, I explored areas that piqued my interest, helping me build deeper knowledge and transferable skills I can use in the future.
Workshops That Connect Theory with Practice
As part of our learning, Willingness hosted regular workshops focused on different fields within counselling and psychology. These interactive sessions allowed us to apply theory to practical situations using real case studies.
One workshop that stood out to me was on sports psychology. As someone who has always loved sports and physical activity, I found it fascinating to explore how psychological principles play a role in performance, motivation, and athlete wellbeing.
Teamwork at Camp Malta and Camp Gozo
In addition to our clinic work, we also took part in Camp Malta and Camp Gozo, which offered us a chance to engage with children and work in supportive team environments. These camps highlighted the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and communication — key skills for any psychology-related role.
This hands-on involvement was not only meaningful but also gave us the chance to apply our learning in diverse, real-world settings.
A Truly International Internship Experience
One of the most enriching parts of this programme was its international nature. Interns came from all over the world — including Australia, Ireland, Germany, Turkey, and Lithuania. This cultural diversity created a unique environment where we could share experiences, perspectives, and professional goals.
This international internship experience helped me develop stronger cultural awareness and adaptability, which are essential traits in the field of mental health. I’m confident these qualities will benefit me in both academic and professional settings.
Living in Malta: A Perfect Work-Life Balance
Beyond the professional aspects, this internship offered an exceptional quality of life. Living in Malta during summer was an incredible bonus. Our working hours gave us plenty of time to explore the island, enjoy beach days, or visit cultural sites.
Weekends were mostly free, so many of us took the opportunity to go on full-day trips, experience local cuisine, or simply relax in the sun. The beauty of the Maltese islands, combined with a strong support system from Willingness, made the experience all the more memorable.
Final Reflections
Looking back, I’m truly grateful for my time at Willingness. This international internship experience provided me with invaluable professional development, exposure to diverse cultures, and lifelong friendships.
If you’re considering a psychology internship abroad, I highly recommend applying for the Willingness Summer Internship. It’s more than just an internship — it’s a journey of growth, discovery, and unforgettable moments under the Mediterranean sun.
