During this time where many of us are experiencing changes in our routines and plans, all in order for us to focus more on taking care of ourselves and others around us, my thoughts are with those of us who due to the nature of their jobs still provide their services from the place of work. Those of us who also experience greater and more intense volumes of work demands due to the current situation. In this blog I will share a few practical suggestions on how you, as a relative, can support your loved ones who are working during Covid-19.
- Ask your loved ones what their needs are when they return home from work
While this suggestion might sound very simple, asking someone what they need after a long day at work shows your interest in the other person’s needs. Keep in mind that some of our relatives spend their working days focusing on the needs of others, so it can be very soothing for them to know that once they are at home, they have someone who is interested in their own needs. Your relative might wish to talk about their day with you for a while, or maybe have some time to unwind, or have a nap to feel more energized. Simply ask them.
2. Support your loved ones’ self-care routines
You can do this in a variety of ways. Maybe you can help them take care of their wellbeing by preparing a healthy dinner for them, or a healthy lunch to take to work with them. You can run a bath for your partner perhaps so that they can relax. Or maybe provide the space and time for them to have a good night’s sleep. Whatever the action, the aim is to help your loved one take care of their physical and mental health. Both of which are always very important, but even more so at this time.
3.Take care of yourself as well
Support yourself during this time. If you are at home while your loved one is at work, do some things that you enjoy doing. Talk to the people who provide you with a sense of support. Also take care of your own physical health. Your loved one will very likely appreciate knowing that you are taking care of yourself; something that can probably provide them with a sense of peace of mind.
