My Internship Experience at Willingness: Insightful, Challenging, and Unforgettable
After completing a three-month internship at Willingness Team in Malta, I look back on this experience with deep gratitude and a heart full of lasting memories. If I had to describe my internship in three words, they would be: insightful, challenging, and unforgettable.
Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to explore various aspects of the mental health and wellness field, gaining hands-on experience that enriched both my personal and professional growth.
Working with Children & Learning from Them
One of the most rewarding parts of the internship was working with children through camps and childminding services. This role gave me meaningful hands-on experience supporting children with autism, which sparked my curiosity and inspired me to research more deeply into their needs.
I’m especially thankful for the time I spent with these children — they taught me so much, far beyond Maltese vocabulary 😊. The experience encouraged me to adapt my approach, reflect on my methods, and embrace new ways of thinking. These moments were both heartwarming and educational, and the children I worked with will always hold a special place in my heart.
Mental Health Outreach at Festivals
We also took part in community events and festivals through the innovative Chat Bar concept, offering mental health support in informal settings. I genuinely enjoyed these shifts. Each one was different — some quiet and reflective, others fast-paced and unpredictable. That element of surprise, the question of “What will happen next?”, made every shift engaging and fun. It also honed my ability to think quickly and stay flexible.
Life at the Hub: Behind the Scenes
I spent most of my time at the Willingness Hub, where I gained a deeper understanding of the organisation’s operations. I was involved in daily administrative tasks such as facilities management, client communication, and marketing initiatives. These experiences gave me insight into the importance of structure and teamwork in running a successful organisation.
Personal assignments pushed me to think creatively, research independently, and reflect on complex topics — all of which expanded my knowledge and prepared me for the professional world.
We also had the privilege of participating in internal trainings and supervisions. Listening to case presentations and contributing to the brainstorming process provided a practical learning experience I’ll never forget.
Conducting Client Intakes: A Powerful Learning Moment
One of the most impactful aspects of my internship was the opportunity to conduct client intake sessions. These sessions allowed me to connect with people, listen to their stories, and better understand the wide range of challenges individuals face.
This role not only deepened my empathy but also broadened my awareness of the diverse mental health struggles people experience. It helped me reflect on what topics interest me the most and what areas I may want to specialise in in the future.
Personal Growth and Lasting Connections
Beyond the professional skills and knowledge I gained, this internship also taught me a great deal about myself. I became more aware of my strengths, areas for growth, and the kind of work environment I thrive in.
One of the most meaningful takeaways was the connection with people — both local and international. The friendships and professional relationships I formed have become an invaluable part of this journey, and I truly hope they will last a lifetime.
Thank you, Willingness, for an experience that has shaped both my personal and professional path.
Saħħa,
