Surgery to correct lower urinary tract symptoms is relatively common practice especially in Malta. Women might undergo surgery for stress urinary incontinence, tension-free vaginal tape for prolapsed bladder and other prolapse repair surgeries. Following such surgeries women have reported sexual dysfunction such as altered orgasmic response, postoperative loss of libido and post operative painful intercourse. These symptoms could be related to damage to the nerve of the clitoris during surgery and this could explain orgasm impairment. It is also possible that the painful intercourse is due to vaginal  shortening and narrowing following surgery. A women’s health physiotherapist possesses skills and modalities required to facilitate enhanced circulation, improved soft tissue mobility and improved strength to allow for a better surgical outcome and ultimately enhanced sexual activity.
